In this episode of the What’s Happenin’ technology podcast, Andy Slawetsky interviewed Phil Joseph, who oversees Private Equity and Office Technology at ConnectWise. Their conversation jumped into ConnectWise’s renewed commitment to the office technology (OT) space and how they are bolstering their efforts to support dealers and resellers.

Here are the key highlights:

  • ConnectWise Overview and Phil Joseph’s Role: ConnectWise, founded over 40 years ago, has evolved from being an MSP (Managed Service Provider) into a comprehensive software and services provider for MSPs and IT service providers. The company offers a wide range of solutions, including PSA (Professional Services Automation), cybersecurity, endpoint management, and more. Phil Joseph, who has been with ConnectWise for about five years, currently oversees private equity and the OT space, focusing on frontline sales, land, expand, and growth strategies for dealers.
  • Engaging the Office Technology Space: ConnectWise’s acquisition of Continuum in 2019 was pivotal in expanding their footprint within the office technology sector. Continuum brought in expert services such as a Security Operations Center (SOC), Network Operations Center (NOC), Help Desk, and dedicated technicians, which aligned well with the needs of dealers transitioning into managed services. Recognizing the potential, ConnectWise ramped up efforts to support dealers, resulting in a 400% growth over the last four years in this segment.
  • Direct Engagement with Dealers: To better understand the needs and challenges of OT dealers, Phil Joseph went on a roadshow, taking 15 trips to visit dealers to gather information. This initiative helped ConnectWise align its service delivery model more closely with the dealer community’s needs. Joseph emphasized the importance of listening to dealers and using their feedback to shape strategies, acknowledging significant contributions from industry figures like Billy Turner from Novatech.
  • Dedicated Focus on the Dealer Community: Joseph highlighted the renewed dedication to the office technology community, noting the formation of a specialized business unit focused entirely on OT dealers. This unit aims to provide comprehensive account management support and tailored solutions, ensuring that dealers receive the attention and resources they need to succeed. He mentioned that recent IT Nation Connect events have incorporated more dealer-specific tracks and breakouts, underscoring the company’s focus on this group.
  • Support Across Dealer Groups: Joseph categorized dealers into three groups: those fully engaged in managed services, those struggling to get started, and those uninterested. For those on the fence or struggling, ConnectWise offers extensive support through its ecosystem, including partner development strategies, expert services, and technical resources. The goal is to simplify onboarding, improve support, and leverage technology for automation to help dealers transition more smoothly into managed IT services.
  • IT Nation Connect – A Community-Centric Event: IT Nation Connect, ConnectWise’s flagship event, is described as a community-centric event rather than just a ConnectWise technology showcase. With over 5,000 attendees, the event offers a platform for learning, networking, and sharing best practices. Joseph highlighted that the event is designed to foster collaboration, growth, and innovation among attendees, regardless of whether they are MSPs, IT service providers, or office equipment resellers.
  • Encouraging Dealer Participation at IT Nation Connect: Joseph encouraged dealers of all sizes, especially those looking to expand their managed services offerings, to attend IT Nation Connect. He emphasized that the event provides valuable opportunities for education, networking, and building relationships with peers and industry leaders. The focus is on knowledge-sharing and helping attendees build a solid foundation for success in managed services.
  • Future Outlook and Commitment to Dealers: Joseph underscored ConnectWise’s commitment to continuously improve and support the dealer community, recognizing the unique needs and growth capabilities of office equipment resellers. With a team of leaders like Jenna Minor, Jason McGee, and Mike Goldberg, ConnectWise is well-positioned to execute its vision and provide valuable resources and solutions to dealers transitioning into managed IT services.
